The Unicorn Statue Near Blake's Marker Excerpt from a log on July 21, 1997 -
So, Ran is walking, and there is an abrupt interruption in the grape vines and trellising, and thick hedges wall off a space, right in the midst. He walks through the vines, trailing his fingers across them. He strolls into the midst, looking curiously. The hedges define a square section, with a narrow mazelike double right angle turn to get into what Ran thinks is the enclosed section.

As he steps into the clearer area in the center, he sees the Unicorn. A moment later, he realizes it's only a statue, done about the scale of a large pony, on a pedestal facing the entrance. The skill of the carving is incredible, even the furry-type skin is sculpted. (continued below)

Ran walks over to the statue, touching it lightly with a slight smile. He looks to the entrance and back again. Then, with a frown, he pauses and looks around sharply, as if hearing something said over his shoulder. There is no one even near him. Puzzled, he touches the statue again. His eyes widen as he hears a voice plainly in front of him, which doesn't have a body.

" 'Curiouer and cuirouser,' " said Alice..." He closes his eyes and puts both hands on the statue, stiffening in surprise as emotions and scenes flood his senses.... Finally, Randolph jerks both of his hands away with a forced gasp. He sinks to sit leaning against the side of the innocent-looking stone. Knowing now that it bears more grief in memory than anything else he has tried newly discovered psionic talents on previous to this, Ran looks at his hands and then over at the marker. His face remains unreadable, but his emotions are in turmoil.

"We ... never got a chance to meet. I'd heard of you ... but we never met." Ran shakes his head quietly, "I ... was always jealous of you." He half smiles, "Odd that. I thought you were ... or Weylin was ... what took my mother from me. I suppose it's foolish, after all ... I would leave a child with George and Cynthia to be with Nika ... but I hated you for a long time." He sits quietly for several moments. "She loved you very much."

Ran stands. Walking over to the marker, he kneels down beside it. "I wonder if ... I wonder if you would like me? A curious thought ... but, its hard not to think of you like some kind of father or ... brother. I would have told Weylin not to call you ... I would have been ... wrong."

Ran stands and looks around, "You know? It's funny. I am all there is here; I am Camber in a very real way. But ... I am less for not knowing you." The tall young man smiles sadly. "I could make it real again ... but not quite. And it would be wrong." He shakes his head again.

"I think that I would like such a place to sleep. Or over looking the ocean. Some place away from others." He turns back to the marker, "I hope I didn't disturb your rest ... "

His Majesty, Randolph Scott the First, King of Camber, just stands there a long time, silent.
